Dear all,
I'm currently researching material of relevance to
Africa/the African
diaspora held at the V&A and have encountered a small
body of Asante
court regalia sold as war indemnity in London following
the British
invasion of Kumasi in February 1874.
Most of the items are gold but the collection includes a
pair of silver
anklets (see image of one attached). These seem quite
unlike any other
Asante anklets I've seen and appear to echo the form of
shackles. Would
anyone have any further information or thoughts about
these?
With thanks,
Helen.
