Performance and the Body Working Group
Expressions of Interest: The Dematerialised Body
For the 2006 TaPRA conference, the working group particularly welcomes
research that investigates the dematerialised body. Like all the objects
of the stage, the material body has most commonly been used to represent
its equivalent. However, there is a parallel and ongoing history of
staging non-material bodies, from the supernatural to the divine. Equally,
the material body itself has been figured by non-material means,
particularly with the advent of new digital technologies. Those expressing
interest in this area may wish to consider:
€ The stage representation of ghosts, phantoms, apparitions etc.
€ The digital body.
€ Dead bodies.
€ The fictional body.
€ Representations of the divine.
Would those interested in offering a paper on this or any subject relevant
to the working group¹s remit please send abstracts to the convenors, Dr
Colin Counsell ([log in to unmask]) and Dr Joshua Sofaer
([log in to unmask]) by the deadline of 7 July 2006. Email with a 200-word
outline of the research that you wish to share with the group and/or any
questions you might wish to raise regarding specific research
methods/practices, and a 50-word biography. For details on the
working group's remit, see the TaPRA website: http://www.tapra.org
GENERAL INFORMATION:
TaPRA is a British research association founded in order to foster and
sustain research in all theatre, performance and related areas in British
and Irish Universities and allied institutions.
TaPRA facilitates the activities of a series of working groups that address
a range of interests. The conference is organised around the work of the
groups, although it is possible to attend as a delegate without necessarily
being a member of a group.
Groups will develop their respective research at the conference. Each group
will then share its work with other delegates in a manner that is
appropriate to the group's enquiries. Respondents will feed back to
delegates regarding practices, themes and issues that emerge from across the
conference. There will be a keynote address that looks beyond the immediate
concerns of the groups and offers a particular vision and/or provocation.
Details of TaPRA and its working groups are given on the association's
website: http://www.tapra.org.
Attendance at the conference costs £150 (waged), £50 (unwaged). The fee
includes refreshments, a drinks reception and annual membership of TaPRA.
A conference dinner will be held on the evening of Friday 8 September.
Tickets for the dinner cost £25.
The website gives information regarding the prospective formation of new
working groups.
TO REGISTER FOR THE CONFERENCE:
Complete the conference registration form on the TaPRA website
(http://www.tapra.org) and return it to Gabriella Apicalla or Richard Pryal
at CSSD by Monday 31 July 2006.
An accommodation list is posted on the TaPRA website (link on the conference
information page).
