Subject: ESRC International Benchmarking Review on Undergraduate Teaching in
Quantitative Methods
Dear IAC Members,
The ESRC and the Funding Councils recognise that there is a growing body
of evidence that highlights the need to develop quantitative skills
amongst the social science population. In particular, this needs to
take place during the earliest stages of career development, to ensure
that there is a sufficient supply of quantitatively trained social
science researchers entering the academic, public and voluntary sectors.
To meet this need the ESRC is working with the Funding Councils to
develop an integrated strategy which aims to improve the supply of
quantitatively trained social scientists. To inform the development of
this Strategy they wish to commission an international comparison of
undergraduate social science courses, to analyse the form and extent of
the quantitative training being offered at this stage, and how this may
encourage students into postgraduate study.
Expressions of Interest are currently being sought from teams interested
in undertaking this study. From these a preferred bidder will be
identified and invited to submit a full tender to undertake the Study.
For more details please see the attached Invitation for Expressions of
Interest.
We would be grateful if IAC members could bring this to the attention of
colleagues they feel may be interested in undertaking this work.
