***Fully funded ESRC DEFRA Joint Collaborative PhD Studentship***
Understanding and Communicating Sustainability: Mapping the Networks of
Sustainable Consumption in the UK
Department of Geography, King’s College London
Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded ESRC DEFRA Joint
Collaborative PhD studentship starting September, 2006 which includes
payment of fees and a maintenance grant. The student will be based in
the Department of Geography with Dr Mike Goodman and Professor Michael
Redclift and will have close links with the collaborative partner DEFRA.
The aims of this PhD project are to (1) to create a comprehensive
stakeholder ‘map’ of non-governmental organisations engaged in
sustainable consumption in the UK to gain insight into the behaviour,
mechanisms, and meanings of sustainable consumption; (2) to produce
deeper and comparative insights into sustainable consumption behaviour
through detailed case studies of NGOs working in different economic and
advocacy arenas (e.g. food and farming, white goods, eco-tourism,
service industries, green energy); and (3) to understand how these NGOs
promote sustainable consumption among different groups of consumers,
especially those on lower incomes, in their use of language and other
communications. More broadly, the aim is to engage with wider debates in
the social sciences to develop new understandings of sustainable
consumption as a concept and policy instrument for achieving a more
sustainable society.
Applications are welcome from candidates with a Masters degree from an
ESRC-recognized postgraduate research training programme (or equivalent
training) in relevant social science disciplines such as Geography,
Sociology, Politics or related disciplines. It is also desirable for the
candidate to have experience with qualitative research methods.
