"Future networked interactive media systems and services for the
new-senior communities: enabling older users to create and share self authored multimedia content" workshop in conjunction with UbiComp 2006 - www.sintef.no/ubicomp
Today, the traditional barriers between mainstream and homemade media are dissolving. In particularly younger and professional users, use networked media applications for new types of social participation through content creation and content sharing. The lack of senior users indicates a need for applications targeting this user group. This calls for a better understanding of elderly users' requirements in the new media landscape.
This workshop is a discussion platform to unfold the design of future scenarios of pervasive interactive multimedia for elderly people. These systems should seek to improve elderly peoples' access to social services, to facilitate social contacts as well as access to context-based infotainment and entertainment, to facilitate social participation and independent living, in sum, to improve the welfare and quality of life for the industrialized world aging society and reducing the digital divide.
More specifically this workshop addresses three major obstacles that must be overcome for elderly citizens to take advantage of these new technological developments: 1) lack of methods and tools to identify elderly users requirements for a social and creative media usage, 2) lack of knowledge in understanding the factors motivating usage of such applications as well as its social impact on senior citizens and 3) the complexity of multimodal user interfaces in networked applications.
The aim is to generate debate about the design and development of new pervasive applications which will make it possible for elderly citizens to be content creators and consumers of self-authored content facilitating in this way leisure and social activities and, at the same time, encouraging mobility. The workshop will focus on a discussion on new methods such as living labs, on-the-field enactments, 'Cultural Probes', Participatory Design approaches and advanced in-situ evaluation techniques.. Moreover, workshop organizers will open up a debate around how too identify suitable novel interaction models more appropriate for these scenarios.
OBJECTIVES
The workshop aims at:
* analyzing crucial user experience issues related to the support independent living and mobility through mobile devices and ambient technologies for the elderly people.
* sharing experiences about applications for socialization, to allow the elderly people to reinforce and extend their social context, sustaining, at the same time, independent living.
* what user requirements will help elderly people towards the creation and sharing of personal, self authored content and the convergence between personal communication and content as well as understanding the societal impact of this kind of media activities. .
* finding suitable methodologies and techniques to prospect feasible and relevant scenarios and design consequently appropriate application/s intersecting between mobile devices, PCs, ambient interfaces and iTV.
* identifying emerging nomadic cultures and lifestyles of elderly people and related socio-cultural trends as a relevant factor in 'predicting the future' of mobile social electronic media for the elderly people and encourage mobility among them.
* exploring the potential of novel user interfaces such as home based ambient displays and iTV in advanced and pervasive communication scenarios for the elderly people using a Participatory Design and user-centred approach that focus on users' cultural, social, behavioural and ergonomic backgrounds.
* making a roadmap of representative social features that encourage social use with mobile devices and iTV.
* becoming aware of appropriate techniques to evaluate usability and accessibility issues in these new applications for sociability with in-situ based evaluation techniques (e.g. user testing) and expert based evaluation (e.g. heuristic evaluation).
* investigating possible new interactive models and new ways of digital content for these systems;
* contributing to create and strengthen a multidisciplinary research community around the topic.
AUDIENCE
The workshop is intended for managers of HCI projects working in the iTV, web, ambient and mobile industry (telecom companies, device manufacturers, broadcasters, service and content providers, etc.); industrial designer; event organizers; human factors practitioners; interface evaluators and testers; HF academics and students with interests in human computer interaction for advanced pervasive systems; designers in general and new trends consultants. Although no particular skills are required, basic knowledge of HCI design issues is recommended.
PARTICIPATION
Workshop candidates are requested to send a position paper (no longer than 4 A4 pages) about a research or study (to be included in one of the sessions described above) they have been involved with before the 16 June to [log in to unmask]
All papers will be peer-reviewed by the members of the Program Committee and participants will be selected on the basis of their interests, quality of the position papers and familiarity with the topic.
