Amiee-Jade,
Wendy's comments also inspired some hope in myself so I
am now wondering how we can gather such a collective voice. In terms of
service users and Carers, I am a member of various groups local and national
who may respond to a questionnaire on such environmental and social issues.
Would probably need one of you academics to create something suitable for
this though. Am also wondering whether there is any means by which your
profession can become more closely affiliated with all the other arts,
sciences, caring professions and 'close to people and nature' occupations in
general. There are many humanitarians in the media who would probably
welcome involvement in such a union so it may be just a case of starting the
ball rolling. This is all said with no religious or political leanings other
than a belief we can make this a better and safer world to live in if all
carers have a means of working together.

Hi Mike, Wendy and all others on this list,
My name is Amiee-Jade and I am a community psych masters student at
ECU in Western Australia. I have been a member of this list for a
while but have not really participated until now. I guess a part of
that stems from a perception of not having much to offer as a newby
to the field.
However, I am particularly taken by this discussion and felt an urge
to respond.
I, like Wendy, see the need for professional AND non-professional
voices. I believe that sometimes professionals can be so used to
their experience of the world that they fail recognise the diversity
of experiences that include non-professionals as well. Furthermore,
my understanding of social change includes an awareness that numbers
are important if we are to have any influence. This requires
partnerships between professionals and non-professionals -
partnerships between like-minded people. We all have something to
offer, right?
Thanks for listening!
Amiee-Jade
