I use SHIC at North Somerset Museum and have used it in other museums I have worked in. This does provide an additional means of searching for objects on top of the text search (we use Modes which allows a wide variety of searches which is very helpful). The collections are also stored in SHIC order as far as possible, though with the lack of space to fit new objects in it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the collections in a perfect SHIC order. I will continue to use SHIC for the existing collections but will have to put new objects into spaces available, therefore out of SHIC order. This will mean keeping plans and location codes up to date. I wondered if other museums using SHIC to store collections are having this problem too? I would be interested to know.

Hi All,
having audited all our collections recently, we were discussing whether is
is useful to still give every object a SHIC code (or two) any more. Our
department were dedicated SHIC users in the past and the store, library and
files are all organised according to it. But does anyone use it any more?
Is there a future for it? Is there anyone discussing these issues that we
can get involved with?
Ideas welcome
