---------------
We use SHIC for all social history, and some archaeology and some decorative art. Combined with MODES, it is a vital tool for creating working databases, for both exhibitions and research. Who needs to remember all the simple names for hats, when you can just search on the appropriate SHIC code? It also works very well when you want to list everything on a specific topic e.g. insurance, pubs, toys etc.
We only use it to four decimal points, because we don't need any more detail for the kind of searches we do. However, we do use the 5.xxxx figures as well, as published by SHCG in the late 80s.
We also use it for the sorting mechanism on our public historic photos database [alongside geography] but we converted appropriate groups of numbers into user-friendly text descriptions!
