Well, you could run a single codebase with multiple settings files, or
use multiple authentication/enrollment sources if your VLE supports
that:-).
Even running multiple unique instances (copies) on a single cluster of
servers has the advantage of being able to pool resources to put
together a modern data center with a ups and generators, sufficient
staff to run it 27/7, etc.
These are some of the ways NZVLE, for instance, serves multiple
institutions an integrated solution with a 'single' VLE running on a
single server cluster (well they do have a back-up cluster--which is a
good thing:-).
And since each instance is 'free', it does start to get a bit cheaper
than paying per user or per institution license fees:-).
