I would like to re-inforce what Barbara says, especialy the continuum
and and Christianity intro. I think we both go into thiese issues in our
books in the Leics. U.P. Early Hist in Brit Series - mine is SW Brit in
Early Middle Ages, and came out in 2004.

Subject: Re: [SWARF] Research Agenda

I only saw the research agenda topics after the meeting as well. There
are no doubt several points in the agenda where the breakdown into
periods which serves many research needs can also introduce unnecessary
barriers. The Roman/Early Medeival transition is one of these and one of
the issues that needs addressing for the south-west is whether there was
a sharp divide between fourth and fifth/sixth centuries or something
more of a continuum (the late antiquity model)and perhaps more contrast
between 4th and earlier 'Roman' centuries. One issue which is very much
part of this and does not appear in the Roman section is the question of
the introduction of Christianity, how this might be discerned
archaeologically and how 4c Christian sites might relate to those of
5c/6c and later. There is a lot of scattered evidence relating to this
for the south-west and the opportunity to move forward by correlating it
and identifying profitable sites for further investigation. 'Ethnicity'
(under Early Medieval)also needs to embrace how the inhabitants of the
south-west may have perceived themselves at a time when they ceased to
be part of the Roman empire, but had not yet been absorbed into Wessex
(Christianity may be a significant aspect here as well).

I attach a (very) draft version of the Research Agenda topics that we
will be discussing tomorrow (5 May). We would welcome any comments,
additions, deletions etc.

Paper copies will be available on the day for those attending.
