Al,
this may not be close enough to what you want to be useful, but there
is a file at
ftp://andromeda.star.bris.ac.uk/pub/star/data/2mass_xsc_map.fits
which is an all-sky density map (2D histogram) generated from the
2MASS extended source catalogue: the value of each pixel is a count
of the number of 2MASS XSCs which fall in that pixel.

The WCS headers are believed correct, but note they use the CAR
projection, which David B informs me is a good bet for confusing
FITS reader software.
