Education Developments
The Textile Conservation Centre
The Textile Conservation Centre (TCC) is part of the University of
Southampton and based on the University's Winchester School of Art
campus. The TCC is an international centre of excellence for textile
conservation education, research and practice. Since joining the
University of Southampton our work has diversified significantly and
we are in the process of implementing a range of exciting new
initiatives planned as natural developments of our current work.
We already provide MA and PhD level education in Textile
Conservation and Museums and Galleries and this portfolio will be
significantly enhanced over the next few years
From October 2006 onwards
1. MRes Science and Heritage
The course (an MA by research) is a specialist conservation
science programme. The students will gain an understanding
of cultural heritage and develop their specialist knowledge
of analytical technology through an extended research
project.
2. MA Museums and Galleries
This continuing, and successful, programme currently offers
three pathways: Culture, Collections and Communication;
Collections Management and History of Textiles and Dress. We
will offer three additional pathways from October 2006:
Access and Learning
For those particularly interested in museum education,
including teachers who are keen on a change of career
direction. This will be offered in collaboration with
the Hampshire County Museum and Archives Service
(HCMAS), one of the largest county museums services in
the UK.
Archives in Museums
This pathway gives students the opportunity to learn not
just about the objects that will be in their care but
also the archives and how they can contribute to the
interpretation of collections. It will be taught in
collaboration with the archivists at the University and
HCMAS.
Interpreting Historic Interiors
This pathway will provide a framework for those keen on
working in historic houses or interpreting period rooms.
We will be working with external organisations including
the National Trust and the independent country house
sector.
From October 2007 onwards
1. MA Organics Conservation
This two year course will complement our existing MA Textile
Conservation by focussing on paper, leather and textiles.
It will be of interest to those who want to work on a wider
range of materials and will be offered in collaboration with
paper and leather specialists within the University of
Southampton and externally
2. BA Heritage Studies: Museums and Galleries
The units we have offered to BA students on this subject
have been extremely popular. This is one of the factors in
our decision to develop this BA programme. Its graduates
will be in a good position to progress to further education
and training in the sector as well as possessing
transferable skills for wider employment. Some will want to
develop their skills, and thus the employment options open
to them in the sector so our MA Museums and Galleries will
be a natural next step for many of them.
