Dear List - Can anyone help with a query that I have? Hamilton Jenkins
states under Great Wheal Eleanor in his Book on Devon Mining that the above
mentioned mine had a 200hp engine with 28 heads of stamps. This I find
quite astonishing, and was wondering if it should have read 20hp? Can
anyone tell me how a 200hp engine would translate into a more common
cylinder size? He also stated that it had a 60ft. waterwheel. The wheelpit
would have housed a wheel more like 40ft. due to the actual size of the
wheelpit. Whilst looking over this site with another list member we
discovered remains of coals which prove an engine was used there. Any other
information on this particular mine would be gratefully appreciated, or
where to obtain information other that the usual MJ’s, local newspapers,
record offices etc. Regards Chris Kelland.
