medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Worry not. That cannot be.
Quite apart from the many reasons for it being impossible (unless it
were a c19 importation of something 'picked up' on the continent) these
are emphatically Cornish late med carvings: bump into one on a dark
night on the other side of the world (?stowed in an Australian tin mine)
and they'd still drip with south western granite and Atlantic coasts. I
feel the need for a pasty and a pint coming on just looking at them.
Anyway, I feel sure I've seen the column among Instruments of the
Passion in comparable west country wood carvings, usually with other
fearsome tools - the odd spear, a crown of thorns, floating in mid-air
around it.

Ay-yi-yi! It used to be thought that the rood screen was 15th c. The
thinking now is early Tudor. Baroque is just plain unlikely--but if
the
iconography says so??
