I have been following this debate with interest, as an historian
based in an archive which prides itself on its digital expertise. I
wanted to make the pragmatic point that another approach is
possible. The generation of a digital image of each page of the
actual document with a facing page of edited and annotated text might
represent an ideal solution. I realise that cost may be an
inhibiting factor for conventional publication, but as an electronic
resource this approach has a lot to commend it.
