Yet another method may be of value to other users of this list.
For an old-fashioned long s, simply to type the letters 017F into your
document, then highlight them then, holding down the alt key, type X.
This converts a UTF-8 character code (e.g., 017F) into the required
symbol. This method means that the character you are typing is
represented in the font which you are using and no hard return is added
to the text for you to delete. This will work with most fonts supplied
with Word.

and the other pages on the Unicode website.
It's possible that these may not work in some Windows applications.
