Tom,
there's a growing Guard info section on the wiki. We'll be adding to
it as we explore non java guards and the best way to support them.
For example, I'd like to not have to send SOAP to a PHP guard as PHP
doesn't do XML very well. In cases such as this, a REST service is
better.
