Of interest to colleagues in the UK only,
A JISC consultation is underway on Thomson Scientific's Web Citation
Index™. Your feedback would be welcome:
Web Citation Index™ is a new product from Thomson Scientific which will
index open access institutional and subject based repositories. Thomson
Scientific has developed a rigorous evaluation procedure that hand picks
the repositories for inclusion. Repositories must be authoritative,
robust, stable, and appropriately formatted.
The /ISI Web of Knowledge/ functionality is incorporated, including
"autonomous citation indexing" tools from the CiteSeer environment.
Special software harvests OAI-compliant metadata from the repositories
and combines it with full document indexes. The software also collects
the citations within the document and instantly links it to the cited
document. /Web Citation Index™/ transcends the capabilities of
traditional Web search engines, providing users with a robust
citation-based discovery vehicle for preprints, technical reports,
dissertations, proceedings, and other grey literature
Please be aware that this is a beta-version and not the finished
product, records are being added continuously with over 200 repositories
identified in the initial development.
When evaluating, please consider the concept of a multidisciplinary
citation index of scholarly content from institutional and subject-based
repositories and the value this will bring to your users research output
and your own institutional repository.
