Dear list-members,
I am new to the list and had better confess at once that I am an italianist, not
a Germanist. (Blame that on my reading Goethe's Italienische Reise at an age
when I was susceptible to influences!) However, I work on the Triestine Italo
Svevo (1861-1928), real name Ettore Schmitz, who for much of his life was
Austrian. He wrote and spoke German very well.
In his papers, there is a poem in German, typed on notepaper headed "E. Schmitz
/Schiffsbodenfarben Moravia". The first stanza (of two) reads:
Was in des Herzens tiefster Tiefe
Dir selber kaum bewusst, sich regt,
Was durch die maechtige Empfindung
Dein herz im innersten bewegt:
Das kannst du niemals offenbaren,
Kein Mensch kann dein Vertrauer sein.
Und mit den innersten Gefuelen
Bist du allein.
I can't do Umlauts in e-mails! Schmitz/Svevo could on his typewriter.
My problem is simply: who is the author of this poem? I suspect he typed it in
the 1880s, as the mood corresponds to diary entries of that time. That he kept
it suggests it was important to him.
All help will be gratefully received.
Best wishes,
Brian M.
