Dear Roger,

Thanks for attaching Whyte’s Unitary Principle in Physics and Biology. Lewis
Mumford, and I believe Einstein, had some complimentary things to say about
him. Whyte’s Next Development in Man has been an inspiration for me—his
reading of the past 10,000 years and his vision of the unitary human are
certainly consonant with the aims of this group. Your post induced me to
read over the extensive transcribed excerpts I made from Next Development,
and I still find the ideas powerful. In case they may be of use for other
members of this group, what seems the heart of Whyte’s message in that book
is attached.

My own interest is the history of wisdom, and the cultivation of wisdom as a
skill utilizing the current empirical studies (by, e.g., Robert J.
Sternberg, Paul B. Baltes, and Ursula Staudinger), and Hubert and Stuart
Dreyfus’s model of skill development. I have just finished a book, Wisdom as
Skill.

Best wishes,
Richard
