Friends,
Michael Katzko's suggestion deserves a response. The discussion
list format is, in fact, designed for discussions. It works well
when people manage their communication, change headers as
needed, and trim replies carefully.
The JISCMAIL system is a well-designed and highly successful
scholarly communication network serving over 4,000 lists using
Listserv software. Altogether, there are several hundred thousand
discussion lists worldwide.
Those who wish to review current or past threads may do so
easily on the list web site,
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/friendsofwisdom.html
When you go to the month, you will be able to review threads
by author, by subject header, or in chronological order by date.
For many of us -- and I am one -- the discussion list is better
than a web-based bulletin board. The discussion list format has
many advantages. For me, the ease of using a list that pops up
on my desktop is far superior to a bulletin board that requires
me to go in and check. Moreover, I take Friends of Wisdom in
digest format, like a daily newspaper. I can't do that with a
bulletin board. A bulletin board format may be useful for small,
well structured groups that work together often, but it's my
view that discussion lists with good archival facilities are better
for groups like this one. At any rate, we are a discussion list:
managing content should solve most problems, and using
headers carefully will serve Michael's needs if he visits the
archive. It will allow him to review threads by subject.
Yours,
Ken
