Although perhaps not a new phenomenon, since the demonstration in Cairo that
ended so tragically last December, it has come to our attention that there is
an emergence of 'gangs' of Sudanese youth in some parts of the city who prey
upon other refugees, both Sudanese and other nationalities, robbing them and,
in some cases, beating their victims. So far we have only heard of knives
being used as weapons and thus far they do not attack Egyptians. There is a
body of literature on gang behaviour, especially in the US, with which we are
not familiar. Whether or not it would relate to the particularities of the
situation in Egypt we do not know, but perhaps some of you would be aware of
either sociological or psychological references that might be useful and would
refer us to them. We would also be interested in any studies relevant to such
behaviour of refugees (or other marginalized groups) in other urban areas or
camps. Please contact both Hakon Jacob Rothing, [log in to unmask], and
Barbara Harrell-Bond, [log in to unmask] Thanks very much.
