Invitation
Major International Conference
Steel Cities: Tradition, Transition and Transformation
Sheffield June 29th - 2nd July 2006
Despite dramatic changes over the years, Sheffield is still globally known
as a Steel City. It is therefore fitting that it should be hosting the first
major conference on the ways that steel has changed, and continues to shape,
spaces and places, lives and livelihoods. The Steel Cities Conference -
organised by Sheffield University in association with the Centre for Tourism
and Cultural Change of Sheffield Hallam University - will bring together an
international audience of scholars, planners and practitioners to discuss
and debate the ways in which steel, in its production and consumption,
shapes the world. The conference will address key themes relating to the
regeneration and re-vitalisation of steel communities and will provide an
opportunity to discover ideas, approaches and best practice from around the
world.
The conference will feature strong representation from key steel regions
such as Pittsburgh, USA and the Ruhr region of Germany. Amongst our keynote
speakers will be Professor Barbara Johnstone from Carnegie Mellon
University, Professor Wolfgang Christ who has been at the forefront of
creative uses of steel in the transformations of the steel regions of
Germany, and the Right Honourable David Blunkett MP, who has represented an
area of Sheffield significantly shaped by the steel industry. The Master
Cutler, Mr Timothy Reed, is also attending the event.
The standard conference fee is £150 and students pay £120. This includes a
full set of conference documentation, access to all conference sessions, all
lunch and refreshment breaks and the conference dinner on Friday (30th June
2006).
We also offer the following daily rates:
£60 standard fee
£40 student fee
