I think the tone of your email is arrogant, insulting and in some
important areas wrong. The EA works under the direction of DEFRA and
politicians who have always protected farmers. The EA has been trying
for years to tighten up on farmers but has always been constrained by
MAFF and DEFRA. If you bothered to look on the EA website under
prosecutions you would notice the number of farmers who are prosecuted
by the EA for causing pollution. The EA has also done loads of work
with farmers to improve storage of farm wastes none of which gets
reported. I used to work for the EA and no several officers who have
been subjected to extreme abuse and in at least one case violent assault
by farmers which is hardly evidence of a matey approach.
I get quite sick of people insulting the EA as an easy target when they
don't bother to find out the full facts.
If you want to use the forum as a soapbox to insult people get your
facts straight!

Subject: Agricultural Waste Regulations
Another Agency "waste" of time
No proactive inspections - will only act if there is a complaint - about
40 exemptions allowing farmers to burn and dump - they are supposed to
register but, hey, no one will inspect so why bother - no waste
licensing of any sort.
Not only is this a "license" to continue burying any sort of waste but
there will be no recording of what they do and where. Why should they be
able to do this when other industry cannot?
And we will only act on complaints - so wgho is going to complain? Who
the hell is going to know?!
This is all about paying lip service to the EC.
But this was as opportunity to deal with the legacy of unlicensed
landfill sites in the UK that no doubt will cause all sorts of poblems
in the future.
Instead DEFRA and their mates the Agency have got together and given
them another power that they are not going to use. What is the point?
