Research Assistant "Using human-dog social interactions to inform
human-computer interactions"
Department of Computing and Informatics, University of Lincoln (UK).
Our Ref: CP1046
The Department of Computing and Informatics at the University of Lincoln has
recently been awarded a research grant by Microsoft Research to explore
whether dog-human interaction can inform the development of computer-human
interaction. In particular, we are addressing, as a pilot study, how we
might use dogs as models for systems which have to interrupt and persuade
people. The work draws on the well established disciplines of ethology and,
in particular anthrozoology, which have yet to be fully explored by the
computing communities. The project involves a truly innovative and highly
interdisciplinary approach which could, in the longer term, make interacting
with any technology truly invisible-to-use.
The candidate should ideally have, or be about to obtain, a Ph.D. in
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or have experience in working on HCI
related projects. Knowledge of affective computing or social robotics would
be advantageous. The specific role will involve working alongside animal
behaviour researchers to develop an understanding of social cognition
between dogs and humans, and, for the large part, will involve the design,
development and user-centric evaluation of software which recreates dog-like
interactions in artificial software characters and embodied devices such as
the Sony Aibo and Philips iCat. Applicants must therefore be skilled in
software development in Java/C++.
The successful candidate will be based at the University's waterside
Brayford Pool campus in the cathedral city of Lincoln. This is a fixed-term
contract, initially for 12 months, to start in June 2006 or as soon as
possible thereafter. Further details and an application form are available
from our website at www.lincoln.ac.uk/vacancies. Closing date is 26 May
2006.
