NODEM 06 Digital Interpretation in Art and Science Museums and
Heritage sites
December 7-9, 2006
Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo, Norway
NODEM (Nordic Digital Excellence in Museums) is a professional forum
and network for increasing knowledge and awareness about new media in
museum interpretation and communication. NODEM 06 is a conference and
an exhibition that focuses on digital media in interpretative
processes in museums. This point of departure defines digital media -
and ICT in general - as mediating and supporting individual and group
interpretations of museum artifacts. We welcome humanists, social
scientists, museum education experts, curators, exhibition designers,
interaction designers and computer scientists to submit a paper or
poster presentation to the conference.
An investigative theme of Digital Interpretation in Cultural
Heritage, Art and Science is related to the ways in which multimedia
narratives mediate knowledge and experience in museums. This theme is
based on an understanding of the museum experience as deeply rooted
in interpretation. Meaning is conceived as mediated by objects,
digital technologies, and social interaction in specific settings.
Digital media makes it possible to explore multiple narratives
through which layers of interpretations about objects are made
accessible. Digital media enables curators and educators to richly
convey the disciplinary foundations – and doubts – that enter into
the museum narratives.
We encourage the submission of either short papers (2500 words max)
or poster presentations, which may include the following topics:
* Studies of digital media as interpretive tools, including mobile
terminals, web-based applications, MR (mixed reality), VR (virtual
reality), and AG (augmented reality);
* Methodological approaches to understanding digital interpretations
in museums;
* -Studies of social, cultural, institutional and technical
infrastructures for digital interpretations;
* Theoretical perspectives on objects, social interaction, and
digital technologies in interpretative experiences in museum
exhibitions.
We also encourage submissions for the exhibition. For further
information see call for exhibitions proposals at NODEM 06 website.
NODEM 06 is committed to a constructive review process. A large,
international scientific committee ensures expert review coverage for
all fields. All submissions are subject to double-blind review.
Participants may be invited to submit extended versions of their
papers for inclusion in a journal special issue we are currently
negotiating.
Accepted papers will be organized by theme in the paper sessions in
the conference program. Session leaders will coordinate presentations
and discussions.
Submission deadline: September 15
Notification of accepted papers will also be published on the NODEM
06 website on October 6.
Early registration deadline: October 20
The final program and final papers will be published on the NODEM 06
website on October 26.
