Vacancy Title : Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate (Ref: 5445)
Department : Digital World Research Centre, University of Surrey
Job Family: Research and Teaching
Grade: RA1A
Starting Salary £24,000 per annum
Duration: 2 years
Close Date: Friday, June 9, 2006
We are looking to recruit a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate to work with British Telecom (BT) in conjunction with the University of Surrey, Digital World Research Centre. The post is for a two year period to examine the sequential organisation of spoken and written communications during the maintenance of various domestic relationships. Candidates should have postgraduate research experience in conversation analysis or a related discipline. The Associate will be employed by the University of Surrey but based at BT's research laboratories in Martlesham Heath, Ipswich.
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership is a government-sponsored scheme to promote the transfer of knowledge between Universities and Small Businesses; British Telecommunications plc is one of Europe's leading providers of telecommunications services. Its principal activities include local, national and international telecommunications services, higher-value broadband and internet products and services, and IT solutions. The University of Surrey is a strong advocate of multi-disciplinary research and in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), UniS was ranked 5th in the UK in terms of the percentage of staff working in 5* internationally excellent departments with over 60 per cent of the University's research-active staff rated `World-class' in their field.
This post provides the opportunity to apply academic research techniques in a commercial context. The project, entitled 'Cross media conversation analysis', will develop a new corpus of both synchronous and asynchronous communication records relating to particular relationships. This will be collected and analysed in order to understand the mechanisms involved in bridging between interactions and switching media. The findings will be used to identify requirements for new integrated communication services, and realise novel service designs with BT research staff.
