In Shrewsbury we agreed to start start scanning cards from this last summer.
Scanning started in Jan - with a backlog to catch up. Our bed-bureau staff
do the scanning in their spare time.
The scanned cards are available from a site which is separate from the main
PAS therefore there is no linkage with results, PACS etc. - major
disadvantage!
The quality of the scan is generally good except when the scanner windows
need cleaning! The sheets are scanned double-sided and this required a
redesign of the ED card to enable the sheets to be torn free and stacked so
they would auto-feed into the scanner.
The ambulance form (A3) will not go through the scanner and is lost.
Occasionally the clerks put a result sheet over the main record - obscuring
it and this is bad news when it occurs.
Recovery of the records is easy and it is great to pull up a previous ecg
immediately. Our system has a problem printing the whole page and we
sometimes lose the bottom line from the text in the print, although it is
visible on-screen! (problem with the print setting which is beeing looked at
currently)
We hold the cards before scanning to ensure that we have any late returns of
forms etc to ensure that we do not have to try and add items later - just
makes it easier for the staff.
General impression is: principle great, delivery ok for most - with some
teething problems - mainly operator-error, could do better in the future
