12. INFORMATION WANTED
I am making a study of Welsh hats (the woman's iconic hats with large flat
brims and slightly conical flat-topped crowns). I would be very interested
to see any in Welsh collections.
Please let me know whether you have any, how many and when it would be
convenient to see them. I would also like to know of any evidence of Welsh
hat making (many of those with labels were made by Christies (of London) or
in Paris, and a few have vendors names in them. Carmarthen Museum has one
made in Carmarthen.
I am also interested in early pictures (pre 1850) of women wearing Welsh
Hats. This is part of some research I am doing into the origin of the hat
which seems to have suddenly appeared about 1840, possibly as a result of
Lady Llanofer's work to preserve Welsh Costume and Language. Any information
or comments gratefully received.
