Proposed Establishment of a New Research Centre on Spatial Economics
The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), in partnership with a
number of potential co-funders, is considering establishing an independent
Centre for Research on Spatial Economics.
The aim of the Centre will be to support high quality research and related
activities on spatial economics with a view to strengthening the theoretical
and empirical understanding of the reasons for spatial differences in
economic growth. Research will focus on developing the evidence base and
supporting methods to tackle spatial disparities within England at all
spatial levels including regional, city-region local/city and neighbourhood.
The centre will also focus on enterprise issues, particularly exploring
spatial disparities in rates of enterprise, as well as variations in
enterprise culture both between and within regions. In addition to
conducting its own multi-disciplinary research programme, the Centre will be
expected to provide a focus for academic networking, stakeholder engagement,
knowledge exchange and transfer and the development of research capacity in
spatial economics.
Further consultations with both the research and stakeholder communities
will be undertaken between May and July 2006, with support from the Regional
Studies Association (RSA), to help to finalise the terms of reference for
the Centre, its research priorities and arrangements for its management and
governance. As a part of this process a consultation document and
accompanying on-line questionnaire has been issued (see links below) and
will be open for comment until 16 June 2006 and two seminars for invited
experts and stakeholders will be held in June /July 2006.
Subject to matched co-funding from interested partners being secured, it is
expected that a call for applications for the centre will be issued by the
ESRC in the autumn of 2006 and that the new centre will be launched in
autumn 2007.
