Dear all
Part of the reason for the numerous responses to Chris's sundial enquiry was that Mailtalk's server was slow in handling the replies, hence we ended up with several people saying the same thing because they hadn't received the earlier replies. Mailtalk has apologised for the slow performance, see email below. This issue should now be resolved.
It's worth adding that the list has now been running successfully for just over a year and this is the first technical problem we have had. Currently there are over 130 SHCG members subscribed to the list. SHCG is keen to encourage more members to join (it's an exclusive membership benefit), so if you find the list useful, please do recommend it to colleagues. Remember that institutional members may have as many list subscribers as they wish.
Can I also point out to everybody that list messages are archived in line with Mailtalk's policies (these were notified in the data protection statement received when you signed up to the list; see http://www.mailtalk.ac.uk/help/policy/index.htm#archives for full details of the policy). SHCG does not currently publicly promote the archive but we may wish to do this in the future, so that people can search the list archives for useful information contained in dicussions. If you have any concerns regarding messages being made more widely accessible, please give me a call for a discussion: direct line 0121 202 2279.
I am always happy to receive any general or technical queries or comments regarding the list. Don't reply to this mail directly as this will get sent to everyone on the list; instead email me at [log in to unmask] or the address below.
Kind regards
Jack

Subject: Mailtalk Server Issues
Dear List Owners
As you may be aware, there have been some intermittent performance and technical issues with the Mailtalk service over the past couple of weeks. No problems have been observed with the distribution of email itself, however Listserv and the web interface have experienced problems such as periods of slow-down and archive searching/logging issues.
We have been monitoring this situation and are going to shortly be increasing the memory in the main Listserv server. While this should resolve matters, if you do continue to experience any problems after today please contact the Helpline with the relevant details.
Thank you for your patience and apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Regards
