CONFERENCE REMINDER
Talcott Parsons. Who now reads Parsons?
An interdisciplinary meeting to assess the ideas of the great
American social theorist Talcott Parsons.

University of Manchester, England
Organized by, Social Theorists, Methodologies & Methods
In association with Midrash Publishing

email: [log in to unmask]
Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection of
papers presented will be published in a special edition of the
journal Classical Sociology and others in a book.
It is difficult for us to realise how great a stir he made in the world…
in theory and the practice of the social sciences and humanities.
Sociology,
politics, psychology, anthropology and economics would be much the
poorer
if it were not for Parsons. He was the ultimate Puritan Scholar:
determined
and disciplined with a keen interest in knowledge.

narratives and identities
Palma, Spain, Universitat de les Balears

Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection
of papers presented will be published in a special edition of the
journal Identity, Self & Symbolism and others in a book.
What makes a hero(in)e at a given historical juncture? How far does
the English
hero(in)e operate to reconcile and/or expose tensions between
individuality and group
identities? What is the importance of the heroic ‘act’ to national
identity?
What difference does gender make to the relationship between
nationality and
the hero(in)eic? Does longevity matter?

CONFERENCE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Workplace Anthropology
A symposium to examine the development, commercial value and
practices for
cross cultural ethnographic research of work-place activities.
26th October 2006
Manchester Metropolitan University, England
Organized by, Social Theorists, Methodologies & Methods
In association with Midrash Publishing
details: http://web.mac.com/theorists/iWeb/
email: [log in to unmask]
Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection of
papers presented will be published in Conference Proceedings (ISBN)
and others in a book.
Anthropology in commercial and non-commercial organizations is
becoming widespread.
Increasingly the forward looking organizations are employing a range
of anthropological
methods of data gathering, analysis and interpretation to inform
their approach to customers
and clients and for product development and design. In an
increasingly competitive
environment for all types of organization what are the boundaries for
organizational anthropology?

CONFERENCE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Representing British Nationalities in Performance Media
(Cinema, Radio, Theatre & Television)
A conference to examine ways in which notions about the
symbolic essentiality of Britishness have been used as a
resource in fiction and propaganda.
25th-26th November 2006
Manchester Metropolitan University, England
International Institute for the Study of Englishness
details: http://www.iise.co.uk/
and http://web.mac.com/theorists/iWeb/
email: [log in to unmask]
Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection of
papers presented will be published in a special edition of the
journal Identity, Self & Symbolism and others in a book.
The portrayal of the nationalities, and regional identities, which
make up
the ‘British’ has been a major feature of many films, plays and
television
dramas and propaganda media. With the political will looking to re-
affirm
the character of Britishness it is time to look at, re-assess and
visit the past.
What better way to do this assessment than to look at the wealth of
British
identities to be found in Performance Media.

CONFERENCE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Re-discovering & Re-inventing Classical Social Theory
The first of a series of conferences to examine the
ideas, theories and arguments of the founders of the social sciences
12th-13th February 2007
University of Birmingham, England.
Organized by, Social Theorists, Methodologies & Methods
In association with Midrash Publishing
details: http://web.mac.com/theorists/iWeb/
email: [log in to unmask]
Pitirim Alexandrovich Sorokin (1889-1968), William Isaac Thomas
(1863-1947),
Florian Witold Znaniecki (1882-1958) and Thorstein (Torten) Bunde
Veblan (1857-1929)
are the subjects of this first conference. Simply put a fantastic
range of ideas, concepts
and insights came out of a rich Eastern European~American heritage.
The contention is:
many of the works by these social theorists have relevance for
understanding the
methodological issues and social problems of contemporary cultures;
but just what,
where & how can we understand what these may be?

CONFERENCE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Fans, Identity & Collecting Behaviours
A cross-disciplinary conference to share understandings about
one of the defining features of Western cultures - the twin phenomenon
of fandom and collecting.
29th –31st March 2007
Manchester Metropolitan University, England
International Institute for the Study of Englishness
details: www.iise.co.uk
and http://web.mac.com/theorists/iWeb/
email: [log in to unmask]
Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection of
papers presented will be published in a special edition of the
journal Identity, Self & Symbolism and others in a book.
This conference aims to bring together theorists, researchers and
practitioners,
and collectors, from a range of disciplines to share knowledge and
understanding
of fans and collecting. It is premised on the assumption that
collecting and fandom
are interrelated, that In particular there is a need to look at
collecting and fandom
from different standpoints including the economic, political,
anthropological,
informational, archival, cognitive, social, personal, sexual,
technological and historical.

CONFERENCE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
The Legacy of the Chicago School
A conference to re-examine the contribution made by
the ‘first generation’ of the Chicago School’ to the development of
the social sciences
11th – 12th April 2007
Birmingham University, England
Organized by, Social Theorists, Methodologies & Methods
In association with Midrash Publishing
details: http://web.mac.com/theorists/iWeb/
email: [log in to unmask]
Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection of
papers presented will be published in Conference Proceedings (ISBN)
and others in a book.
The ‘Chicago School’ of sociology is famous. So famous it has become a
generic term for a range of perspectives, approaches and methods which
are rarely cited. Who now cites Robert Ezra Park, Albion Small,
Walter C. Reckless,
Ruth Shonle Cavan, Edward Franklin Frazier, Everett Hughes, Roderick
D. McKenzie,
Frederick M. Thrasher, Ernest Burgess, Homer Hoyt or Louis Wirth?
One occasionally sees W.I. Thomas and Florian Znaniecki cited (but
not Dorothy Swain).
George Herbert Mead is still a major source of theory and concepts.
But what of the
detailed empirical work of Harvey Warren Zorbaugh, Charles Edward
Merriam,
Samuel C. Kincheloe, Harold Foote Gosnell and Nels Anderson?

CONFERENCE CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Durkheim's Legacy: The Influence of Aphoristic Argument
A conference to critically evaluate the reassessments
& re-considerations of Durkheim.
24th – 25th May 2007
University of Birmingham, England
Organized by, Social Theorists, Methodologies & Methods
In association with Midrash Publishing
details: http://web.mac.com/theorists/iWeb/
email: [log in to unmask]
Postgraduates are welcome at a (subsidized fee). A selection of
papers presented will be published in Conference Proceedings (ISBN)
and others in a book.
The re-assessements & re-considerations of Durkheim at the turn
of the millenium (especially in terms of Harold Garfinkel’s second
book Ethnomethodology’s Program: Working Out Durkheim’s Aphorism)
have brought a renewed interest in looking at Durkheim more positively;
in contrast to critiques of the 1970s and 1980s. But have these re-
assessments
added any clarity to our understanding of just what it means to be an
original,
creative founder of a new academic discipline.

papers presented will be published in Conference Proceedings (ISBN)
and others in a book.
This is a conference for any person working in, or with an interest in,
the ways in which we can study human activities. This conference aims
