2 ESRC CASE (1+3 or +3)
PhD Studentships October 2006
A three/four-year maintenance grant of £14,300 (normal ESRC grant with a
supplement of £2,000), programme fees and a research training support
grant of £750 is offered. Award holders will also gain experience of working
in public sector agencies.
1. Income levels and social exclusion/participation amongst people with
severe and enduring mental illnesses
Funded by the ESRC and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust and
supervised by Professor Ann Davis (Institute of Applied Social Studies) and
Dr Martin Commander (Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust), the
overall aim of this project is to investigate the relationship between levels of wealth,
income and social and community participation by people with severe and enduring mental health problems.
A narrative approach including the use of diaries and interviews will be developed with an advisory group
of mental health service users.
2. Family alcohol misuse and children and young people at risk
Funded by the ESRC and Aquarius Action Projects (www.aquarius.org.uk)
and supervised by Professor Saul Becker and Dr Jan Waterson (Institute of
Applied Social Studies), the overall aim is to investigate risk and resilience in children of alcohol abusing parents.
The research will take place in the context of a newly established family work service for families where there is concern
about parental drinking. A participative child-centred methodology, involving a retrospective case record survey
and semi-structured interviews with families and professionals will be adopted.
For both studentships you should be a UK citizen or EU citizen with
three years' residency in the UK. All applicants will be expected to hold a
good undergraduate degree in social science. Applicants for +3 studentships
will also need a suitable Masters degree with a strong research training
element (preferably an ESRC-recognised postgraduate qualification in
research methods, or satisfying most of the ESRC research training
