Well, the news is quite different today, G.W. Bush
said it was 'wildly speculative' and I've seen several
quotes from Jack Straw like the following:
"Straw also said the idea recently reported in the
media that the United States could use nuclear weapons
against Iran was "completely nuts.""

So it's the usual retraction from the 'extremist'
position by making it seem the 'extremity' of such
things as the Hersh story. But I don't think it means
much, except the administrations' way of discreditting
independent news sources and counting on the public's
lack of memory.
