Hi all,
Just got back from travelling, having paid my respects to the best
poet's bookshop, Collected Works, in Melbourne - a city with a few
summing-up memories for me, one of them contained in the below.
JJ
It’s something in this city
an old friend clacking like a tram
who then does something strange
a hook turn so you don’t know
where to turn.
Somewhere between
the station
and the markets
in shadows and in lanes
where it’s cold and coffee
I see them that they
not see me
not years gone.
Some guy kicks the lights
and a truck
loaded up with watermelons
pulls in beside the park
in this country of country
towns there’s something
making tyres screech
a smoke and a bet
that streets smile or frown.
It’s about half past nothing
you know there’ll be a lot of weather
hotels are all blue and grey
and parking if you’re clever.
In my room
the towels are made in Pakistan
but the sky looks just
like Melbourne.
