Handling Archives Workshop
I am looking for a venue (for example a Record Office Reading Room) where I
can present this workshop. Ideally I would like:
*	access to materials from the collections for demonstration purposes;

*	at least one internet access point;
*	a video player;
*	a flip chart stand;
*	sufficient room for 10 - 15 participants
*	If original examples are used, I would need to visit before the
workshop to identify suitable examples; and have access to the venue and
materials in time to set up the workshop on the actual day. Therefore there
are some demands on staff time.
*	Please contact Liz Bowerman ([log in to unmask] 01970
610226) if you can offer a suitable venue. If there is sufficient interest
the workshop could be repeated at a different venue - therefore if you would
be interested in attending or sending staff or volunteers, please send me
names and location.
*
*	NPO Preservation Assessment Survey Workshops
*	CyMAL and the National Preservation Office will be providing
workshops on using the Preservation Assessment Survey. The workshops will be
delivered by 2 NPO staff and the maximum number of participants is 15.
*	We would like to see if there is sufficient interest to hold more
than one workshop in Wales, and the area of Wales where there is most
demand. The cost is £50 + VAT per person. If you are likely to attend,
please could you reply to Liz Bowerman ([log in to unmask] /
01970 610226) by the 20th April.
*
*	We are also looking for venues to hold the workshops, preferably
with the following:
*	A collection to practice sampling and assessment (an academic or
local studies library would be ideal)
*	A PC with Microsoft Access.
*	Space for up to 15 participants.
*	If you can provide a suitable venue, please reply to Liz Bowerman
([log in to unmask] / 01970 610226) by the 20th April.

*	28 April 2006, London 1000-1600
By 2007 there will be more Britons aged over 65 than under 16. Despite
compelling business, ethical and curatorial cases the involvement of older
people is low on the agendas of most museums. What audience development work
can museums do to attract the growing population of more active and affluent

*	CONSERVATION
*
*	How does it work? The Preservation Assessment Survey
*	The survey model works as follows:
*	Users identify a sample of 400 items selected at random or
systematically from a library or archive, or one or more of its collections.
The sample is always 400 (or as close as possible), whatever the size of the
collection.
*	A short questionnaire is completed for each item in the sample. Part
one is a 'tick box' form, asking questions relating to the preservation of
the item - access, use, accommodation, condition and usability, value and
importance. Part two requires an assessment of the condition of the item and
the types of damage it may show.
*	Information from the forms is entered into an Access database, and
data is returned to the NPO for the generation of reports

NEWS - SCOTLAND

Technical Good Practice in ICT
March 29, 2006
The National ICT strategy for Scotland's museums recognises the fact that
museums need to have access to clear and practical introductory guidance on
technical standards. To help achieve this, we have produced some written
guidance which is designed to provide museums with good practice
recommendations on technical aspects of ICT.
The guidance can now be downloaded from the SMC web site at:

Museums Without Roofs 28 March 2006
Stories such as the plant hunting adventures of Captain Cook and Joseph
Banks expressed through plants familiar to many can set a trail to an
exhibition or collection elsewhere. There are a lot of keen gardeners, often
non users of museums, willing to start such a journey. In the West Midlands
alone there are over 500 horticultural societies, 50 National Plant
Collections in addition to the visitors to the region's parks and gardens.
