Dear Friends,
I would be grateful if you could pass this message on to postgraduate
students of Modern Languages and other Humanities-based students within your
institution and draw their attention to the attached programme for a
video-linked workshop.
You may have heard that earlier this year the AHRC awarded a grant to a
consortium of universities to provide research training for postgraduate
students of Modern Languages. The lead institution is the Institute for
Germanic and Romance Studies in London with the universities of Birmingham,
Leeds, and Glasgow as partner institutions. Each university has been
allocated an area of the country for which it can provide training and there
will also be national events; hosted at some of the centres. The University
of Glasgow has responsibility for Scotland.
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Glasgow in conjunction with
the Graduate School of Arts and Humanities has organised an afternoon's
video-linked workshop for the postgraduate community of Scotland and part of
the North of England on the theme of Issues of Interdisciplinarity. Though
languages form one important manifestation of interdisciplinarity, the topic
will also be of interest to many other postgraduates researching and
studying in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The workshop will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 18 April, using the
resources of the Janet live video link. This will enable students and staff
of other institutions to participate without having to journey to Glasgow to
take part (although they will be very welcome if they wish to come). You
will be able to participate actively from within your own institution,
something which itself is a valuable learning experience for those
participating. The attached programme sets out the format for the afternoon
which aims to bring together postgraduates across different institutions to
be able to form and share their views on a topic of major interest.
The venue within each of the institutions participating is also listed on
the programme, and it will be sufficient to turn up there between 1.30 and
5.00 to be able to take part in what should be a stimulating event.
I hope to see you there - in person or over the link.
