I have a copy of the Ballantyne book (Deep Down: A tale of the Cornish
mines), and I think it has that same illustration of the miners about to be
lowered in a basket. It sounds like the German book is a translation of
same. Does anybody know the first publication date of the original English
version? This book turns up with booksellers from time to time, but in
various states or editions with different covers etc.

Dear List,
I found this reference through the "Karslruher Virtueller Katalog"
(http://www.ubka.uni-karlsruhe.de/kvk.html):
Title: Tief unten in der Mine : oder: Lebendig begraben. Aus dem Englischen
(this is "Translated from the English").
Ed.: Bremen ; Zürich ; Cincinnate : [s.n.], [1863].
Description: 8° : with 4 engravings.
It was found in Helveticat, the catalogue of the Swiss National Library in
Bern.
(http://www.snl.admin.ch/slb/index.html?lang=en) You may contact them to
tell
you why the give 1863 as a probable publication date. It has very likely to
do
with the original english edition. The title in english would be "Deep down
in
the mine". I looked for it in COPAC and the only thing that comes close to
it is:
Main Author: Ballantyne, R. M. (Robert Michael), 1825-1894
Title Details: Deep down : a tale of the Cornish mines / by R.M. Ballantyne
Edition: New ed
Publisher: London : James Nisbet, 1873
Physical desc.: 420 p : illus
The book is in the National Library of Wales.
The best thing to do, I think, is to contact the people in the Swiss Library
and
ask them for details.
