Vigils are the prayers said the eve of a feast day. Nevertheless, the
Furetiere Dictionary says :
VIGILES. s. f. plur. se dit particulierement des Matines de l'Office des
morts. Il a fait dire des sept Pseaumes, des Vigiles pour l'ame de son pere.
Les Chartreux disent Vigiles tous les jours, hors les Festes & veilles des
Festes.
