medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am attaching here a photo of what is probably the oldest
representation of St. Peter Martyr in existence, a sculpture dating from
about 1265 in the church of Ag. Paraskevi in Chalkis/Negroponte,
Greece. It is on the triumphal art, basically invisible unless you are
on a ladder. My partner, Pierre MacKay, & the restoration architect,
Nikos Delinikolas, have demonstrated that this church was the Dominican
priory authorized in 1249. The dendrochronology of the roof beams fits
1250-1252. It was a very nice piece of research for both, neither of
them aware of the other, & they met at a conference in Chalkis, both
talking about identification of the church using totally different
methhods. Both were somewhat anxious as it has been a Gospel Truth in
Chalkis that the church (Gothic arches, preaching yard) was a 6th C
Byzantine basilica. The bishop says so & this is his seat & he is not a
user-friendly bishop.
Notice that the little martyr once had a real knife attached to his head
with dowels, this one right through the eyes. Which may suggest
something about his murder that has been moderated in other images.
