medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. April) is the feast day of:
Simeon of Jerusalem (d. c. 107) Simeon, son of Clopas, was a cousin
of Jesus. He became head of the Christian community in Jerusalem
after James was martyred (c. 62). S. was arrested in the reign of
Trajan, tortured, and crucified, supposedly at the age of 120.
Asicus (d. c. 470) Irish legend tells that Asicus was one of
Patrick's earliest disciples, and that he was first bishop of Elphin.
He left his bishopric to become a hermit on an island in Donegal Bay.
Maughold of Man (d. c. 498) Maughold also appears in the Patrick
legend. He was a bloodthirsty man, converted to Christianity by
Patrick. As penance, Pat made M. leave Ireland in a small boat
without oars or sail. He reached the Isle of Man, where he eventually
became a bishop.
Tutilo (d. 915) The German Tutilo was a monk at St. Gall. T. was a
famous artist and musician, and also served as head of the monastic
school.
Zita (d. 1278) Zita was born near Lucca in c. 1218. She was a
domestic servant to a Lucca family from age 12 until her death. She
was famous for her hard work, and miracle stories were told of her
generosity to the poor (the miracles usually compensated for her
overgenerosity with her master's goods). Z's cult was approved in
1696, but Dante already regarded her as patron of Lucca.
James of Bitetto (blessed) (d. 1485) James was born in Zara
(Dalmatia). He became a laybrother in an observant Franciscan
community in his home town, and at about the age of 38 transferred to
Bitetto (near Bari). He was famous for humility, asceticism, and
contemplation. J. was beatified in 1700.
