medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am inclined now to translate 'mansa' as 'estate' in this context, not
least because it is now clear to me that the 'mansa' is contrasted with a 'villa'
in the Charter, the villa apparently referring to one of the larger farming
hamlets (three arpennae) /within/ the mansa. (Farm hamlets remain a feature
of this area -- as do most of the placenames in the Charter.)
May I repeat my thanks to the List for its assistance.
Susan
