medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (29. April) is the feast day of:
Wilfrid the Younger (d. c. 744) This Wilfrid (not to be confused
with the famous, argumentative Wilfrid who argued about the date of
Easter and Roman church organization) was educated at Whitby, served
as chaplain to St. John of Beverley, and succeeded John as archbishop
of York He spent his last years in a monastery.
Hugh of Cluny (d. 1109) Hugh, born in 1024, was the eldest son of
the count & countess of Semur. He entered Cluny at age 14, became
prior when 21, and in 1049 was elected abbot, an office he held with
great distinction for 60 years. The Cluniac confederation grew
enormously during H's reign. H. was also a prominent member of the
church reform party, an important mediator in the squabble between
Henry IV and Gregory VII, and his reign saw the construction of the
third abbey church at Cluny. Hugh was canonized in 1120 by Pope
Calixtus II (who was a Cluniac monk himself).
Catherine of Siena (d. 1380) Caterina di Giacomo di Benincasa was
the 24th child of a wool-dying couple of Siena. She had her first
vision at age 6 (says her legend), made a vow of virginity, and in
1362 started to live a penitential life (at the age of 15). She
refused to marry and started extreme fasting. She became a great and
influential visionary, to say the least. C's popular cult started as
soon as she died and was canonized in 1461. In 1939 C. and Francis
of Assisi were declared primary patrons of Italy, and in 1970 C. was
named a doctor of the church---the first woman and first layperson to
receive the honor.
