The Annual Dante Inferno Marathon
In The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC
Thursday, April 13 at 9 PM
Hundreds of poetry lovers will gather at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine
for the annual reading of Dante's Inferno on Thursday, April 13 from 9 PM to
midnight. Free admission. All are invited.
The reading occurs during the Maundy Thursday vigil, the very hours Dante
intended the events in the epic poem to take place. As in previous years, a
sizable crowd will assemble in the Cathedral for the moving and dramatic
literary and liturgical event. Readers will use various translations, in
addition to the original medieval Italian, to recite cantos of Dante's
masterpiece.
Join Cathedral Dean, The Very Rev. Dr. James A. Kowalski, newly appointed
Cathedral Poet-in-Residence Charles Martin, poets, translators, academics, and
friends of Dante as they celebrate him by reading selections from the Inferno.
The reading concludes at midnight as Cathedral Organist Timothy J. Brumfield
fills the great sacred space with an organ improvisation.
