Speaking of which (see below), what about the US covert actions in
Afghanistan in summer 1979 which provoked the Soviet occupation of
Afghanistan in winter 79/80?

ABOUT THE TALK:
Few if any academics doubt that the use and abuse of intelligence are
central to an understanding of the international crises of the 21st
century. The curse of the "dodgy dossier" has blighted many Cambridge
dinner party conversations. The fact that the use and abuse of
intelligence are equally essential to an understanding of the crises of
half a century ago, however, has escaped most historians' attention.
Even when intelligence appears in histories of the Cold War, the treatment
of it is usually eccentric and lopsided. CIA covert action in Castro's
Cuba and Allende's Chile (to take only two examples) is common knowledge;
the fact that they KGB was even more active in both countries has escaped
historians' attention.
Nowhere in Britain was KGB recruitment more successful than in Cambridge.
My talk will deal with the Cambridge as well as the global dimension."
