POSTGRADUATE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
ESRC Human Geography Postgraduate Studentship
Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow
The Department of Geographical and Earth Sciences has an ESRC quota award to make for a ‘1+3’ mode, or a ‘+3’ mode, studentship beginning in October 2006. The studentship covers fees and maintenance for full time study. Applications are invited before Friday 21 April 2006 from suitably qualified students.
The Department especially welcomes applications on one of the three following research themes:
• The impacts of globalisation/localisation on economic, social and cultural spaces. Particular interests include: changing employment structures; impacts on urban spaces, both in the West and the global South; the spatiality of resistance movements to globalising processes; the global engagement of industries from the global South.
• Environment and development. Particular interests include: gender, local environmental knowledges and development in the global South; environmental implications of, and resistance to, large-scale development projects; human-nature interactions in rural Scotland.
• Economic/cultural/socio-political restructuring in Britain, especially Scotland. Particular interests include: evolving health and welfare issues and challenges; changing urban environments and governance issues; spaces of public art in the city; cafe 'cultures'; historical and social geographies of 'otherness'.

Candidates must have attained, or be likely to attain, at least a 2:1 Honours degree in Geography or a closely related discipline. The funding covers fees and maintenance for a compulsory first year Masters training programme in Human Geography, followed by a 3 year PhD programme. Students who have already completed a Masters programme which is ESRC recognized may alternatively apply for +3 mode.
Applications must be made by 21 April 2006, and should include a Research Proposal of no more than 1000 words along with a copy of the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae.
