Spring for New Growth: An MSc opportunity at the University of Bath
************************************************************************
***********
Through the MSc in Human Communication and Computing (HCC) at the
University of Bath, you can find fresh new ways to see the world of
interactive systems. It offers you a unique opportunity to discover
and develop new
ways of thinking about cognitive technologies. You'll be able to
tackle design issues for single-user and collaborative systems with a
degree of insight into their critical success factors.
Our abilities to communicate are continuously undergoing
transformation through innovations in interactive technology. Whether
wikipedia or wireless, MSN or videophone, our access to information,
services and one another is changing how business relates to its
customers and how citizens are shaping society. HCC brings together a
combination of computer science and psychological knowledge and
skills to tackle the challenges accompany this transformation.
As a member of the HCC programme, you will grow your knowledge. You
will be put into a position to be able to work through the benefits
and usage costs of computing technologies intended to support human-
human and human-computer interactions. You will gain expertise in
maximising the value of systems to support individual work, person-to-
person communication, group working and collaboration.
The UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council has
recognised the value of knowledge and practical training of this kind
by making studentships
available for UK and EU applicants*. An HCC degree qualifies
international students to work in the UK under the UK Home Office
Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme**.
More information about the HCC programme can be found here:
http://www.cs.bath.ac.uk/hcc/
What is it like to study on the HCC programme?
----------------------------------------------
HCC students come to the programme with a variety of experience: from
several years of industrial experience to direct from a first degree;
full-time or part-time registration***; from the UK, other EU states,
and around the world; with computer science, psychology, law,
linguistics or economics degrees. All bring their experiences to bear
on the subject matter they encounter through their studies on the
programme.
HCC students enjoy a supportive environment characterised by a high
degree of interaction with faculty members. A typical year sees
groups of about 15 students in any class for the majority of their
taught experience.
HCC is a truly joint venture by the Computer Science and Psychology
departments at the University of Bath. Half of the HCC classes are
lead by Psychology staff and half are led by Computer Science staff.
All are active in areas that directly contribute to HCC classes.
Consequently, you benefit from vibrant, varied and relevant teaching
throughout the programme.
HCC graduates typically go on to work in web usability, systems
analysis, design and development, or to pursue careers in research.
*Can I get financial support to study on the HCC programme?
------------------------------------------------
The UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
recognises HCC as addressing a core skills gap and has awarded
funding for HCC under its Collaborative Training Account. Full-time
EU applicants are eligible for financial support (UK: fees + stipend;
other EU: fees), under this EPSRC scheme.
**What is SEGS?
------------------------------------------------
The UK Home Office has identified a limited number of skills shortage
areas for the UK economy and accords non-EU graduates in these areas
special status for employment up to 12 months following graduation.
For more information, see:
http://www.cs.bath.ac.uk/hcc/#SEGS
***How do I apply for part-time study?
------------------------------------------------
The application form is the same for full- and part-time
registration. Part-time students join in with class activities in the
same way as full-timers, and are treated as full members of the
programme. Flexible study arrangements mean that students can work
towards their MSc over a two to four year period.
How do I apply for a place on the HCC programme?
---------------------------------------------------------------
An application form can be downloaded from the following URL:
http://www.bath.ac.uk/prospectus/postgrad/apply/index.html
Alternatively, an application pack can be sent to you by post if you
contact the HCC secretary, Ms Angela Cobban (tel: 01225 386965; email
