CALL to industry and Academy for Atelier Topics and Leaders for the
CONVIVIO Interaction Design Summer School 14-25 August 2006
Location: Napier University, Edinburgh, http://www.napier.ac.uk/convivio/
Theme: Enjoying or Enduring Technology - Visions, Boundaries and Transformations
The Annual Summer School for graduate students of many disciplines and young professional
designers has been run for the past five years in locations throughout Western and Eastern
Europe. In 2006 it will be it Napier University, Edinburgh, Scotland, coinciding with the two
first weeks of the Edinburgh Festival.
The Summer School brings together 50 talented young people from many countries and
disciplines for ten days to deepen their understanding of user-centred design of interactive
systems for everyday life ‘convivial’ technologies in the sense both of Dante and Illich.
The School consists of morning lectures and afternoon `ateliers , i.e. workshops where
teams of students work on themes proposed by and discussed with the atelier leaders.
Given the success of the ateliers in past years we would like to try this year to gain value
from the work done by students beyond their own learning. We invite research groups,
professors and design groups working in the design of convivial technologies to run an atelier
on a topic of passionate interest to them.
What would you gain? Ten days with a team of young professionals working together on a
project that maybe otherwise you would not have had the resources to pursue. Spending time
with other professionals in the field. If you are hiring, a chance to see the work of 50 talented
young people.
What do the students gain? To work with professionals on a topic they find really
interesting—and possibly contacts for an eventual job. A combination of blue-sky research and
contact with the real world of research, development or design.
What must you give? First and foremost a proposal for a theme for an atelier project /
workshop, that connects to a people-centred approach and includes field work with the local
community / festival, and ten afternoons of your time, plus some time in preparation before
you arrive. If you are a company, we ask for funding to pay the cost of an atelier leader (which
you might propose, or the Summer School team will find for you). Also a proposal for a
general lecture in one of the morning sessions.
What does Convivio gain? 10 interesting projects to push forward ideas for the future
design of interactive technologies and the exchange of views and knowledge Convivio was set
up to promote. Of these 5 will be selected according to student priorities.
