Major Research Fellowship in Modern Studies at the British School at Rome.
The British School at Rome proposes to appoint a Major Research Fellow in Modern Studies for a limited period of three years.
This new Fellowship, made possible by a special grant from the British Academy, is an exciting new development for the School, aiming to enhance its existing commitment to a wide range of disciplines including study of the modern period and the social sciences. It is suitable for someone working in the social sciences, or any discipline relevant to the study of the modern world, whose research focus is particularly on Italy. The successful project will complement the existing research strengths of the institution, especially in archaeology, ancient, medieval and modern history, art history, and architecture. Projects that involve cross-over between several disciplines, including those which form part of BSR's existing research profile, are particularly welcome. The successful project will enhance the academic life of the institution as a whole, including its resident community of postgraduate scholars, by incorporating lectures and workshops; a suitable programme might involve a number of focused workshops leading towards a major conference. It is expected that it will lead to significant publication.
The Major Research Fellowship is designed to give someone, either at postdoctoral level or currently in post at a UK University, the opportunity to enjoy a three-year period unencumbered by standard teaching and administrative responsibilities in order to pursue a major research project in the field of modern studies, capable of being completed within the duration of the award and appropriate for such a period of concentrated research. The Fellowship involves no teaching or general administrative duties except those inherent in the development of the research project itself. The Fellow will however be expected to make an active contribution to the research environment of the School, foster interest in modern studies among the resident community of postgraduate scholars, and stimulate academic exchange within the research community of the School through organization of and participation in seminars and other events.
In the case of an applicant not yet in an established post, a doctorate in a relevant discipline must have been completed (and awarded) at the time of application. You will be paid a stipend corresponding to the minimum starting salary for a lecturer on the UK Universities scale, and offered accommodation suitable for a single person in the British School. If you have a family, or for other reasons wish to live outside the School, you may do so at your own cost, and will retain a room in the School as office space.
In the case of someone currently in post, the School will support a replacement teaching corresponding to the minimum starting salary for a newly appointed UK University lecturer or reach equivalent arrangements as mutually agreed between BSR and the home University, such as to allow the successful applicant to be granted paid leave from all university duties. Accommodation arrangements will be as above. The award is for a limited term of three years, and is open to anyone holding an established post at a UK University whose retirement age does not fall within that period. The British School at Rome is not a unit of assessment for the purposes of the Research Assessment Exercise, and will work together with the home University of the person appointed to ensure that their research output counts fully towards the RAE of the home University. BSR will pay to the home institution of the Research Fellow costs not exceeding the salary, pension and NI contribution costs for a newly appointed UK University lecturer. It will not pay overheads for such a post nor Full Economic Costs. Applicants should include a letter from their Vice-Chancellor, Dean, Head of School or appropriate institutional figure indicating agreement, in the case of appointment, to this condition.
The position is open to British and Commonwealth citizens and to those who have some association with the UK University system, either through the completion of a doctorate at a UK University, or through holding a post at a UK University.
Applicants should frame their proposal as an outline of a major 3-year research project based at the BSR. They should explain how basing such a project at the BSR will bring advantages both to the project and to BSR.
There is no application form for this position. Candidates should send a research proposal (no longer than 3 sides of A4), accompanied by a CV and names of at least two referees. Referees should be asked by the candidates to write to the Director's Assistant by the closing date.
Closing date for applications: Friday 26 May 2006.
Interview date for shortlisted candidates: Friday 23 June 2006
Starting date of award: 1 October 2006
Enquiries and requests for further particulars should be addressed to the Director's Assistant, Eleanor Murkett, The British School at Rome, via Gramsci 61, 00197 Rome, Italy, preferably by email to [log in to unmask]
