MA IN THE PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGE
http://www.dur.ac.uk/dcaps
School of Modern Languages and Cultures University of Durham, UK
The MA in the Photographic Image at the University of Durham offers
training in the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in
the study of photography theory, history and analysis, and does so from
an intercultural perspective. It focuses on the intersections of
photography, discourses around photography and constructions of cultural
identity across a range of contexts and chronologies: from the coded and
highly conventional snapshots of the family, through the images that
document and commemorate the events in collective history, to specific
instances of photography and war. The MA also provides training in
generic research skills.
Modules available include:
. An Introduction to Photography Studies
. Critical Readings in Photography
. Dissertation
. Research Methods and Resources
. Photo-iconicities
. Photo-memory
The MA has been developed by a team of researchers based in the
departments of French, German and Spanish at the University of Durham
who share an interest in issues surrounding photography, and are
actively involved in publishing and advancing photography studies. This
team organises a regular seminar series, hosts international
conferences, in addition to developing a web-based resource centre
devoted to photography.
The MA in the Photographic Image is available on a full and part-time
basis and is open to suitably qualified graduates from a range of
disciplines, including Modern Languages, History, English, Art History,
Philosophy, Fine Art, Photography, Anthropology or any other relevant
programme. The MA will be of interest to those wishing to work in the
heritage or culture industries and also to those wishing to pursue a PhD
in an area related to photography.
